Since the collapse of the Christian Byzantine empire, Christianity and other non-Muslim religions have continuously diminished throughout the old Byzantine world.
This article will focus on the genocidal war against Christians by Islam, although, the author is not unmindful of savage attacks upon other non-Muslim religions throughout the old dominions of Byzantium.
Northern Africa, the Levant, the Anatolia, Constantinople, Syria, Lebanon, Coptic Egypt, Persia were once filled with vibrant and devout Christian populations. However, over the millennia diminished by the unrequited savage onslaught of Islam. The Ottoman Sultanate and successor Turkey were grievously guilty of perpetrating evil atrocities against Christianity in the name of Allah and Islam.
Consider the tax on Christians, devshirme
“Systematic collection of non-Muslim children on rural Christian populations of the Balkans, practiced by Ottoman Turks, in which every three or four years 300 to 1000 healthy boys and young men had to be taken by force to Turkey, converted to Islam and educated for military profession or religious disciplines.” (Source:Wiktionary.com)
For example, the Islamic Sultans would confiscate Christian boys stealing them from their Christian parents, converting these Christian boys to Islam and training them to fight as janissaries against Christian kingdoms. “The new Christian boys were turned over to the new Sultan. He was to be their King. They were his property destined to form the Sultan’s elite infantry units.
“Islamic law forbids that other Muslims be sold into slavery,” said, Micah Azziz, a Turkish doctoral candidate from Istanbul. Azziz is working on his Ph.D. thesis on the Janissaries.
Once the Janissaries had recovered from their long trek from the Balkans, they were put under both mental and physical tests by the Turks. They were trained for eight years in archery, swordsmanship, horsemanship, wrestling and weightlifting. Some would go on to work on the estates of Turkish nobles as farmhands. Others learned skills like blacksmithing, masonry, and carpentry. The very best Janissaries were sent on to the Sultan’s palace, where they would form his elite bodyguard. Presiding over this entire training process was the chief Eunuch who served the Sultan with unwavering loyalty.

Despite Western secularists and modern day Muslim propagandists, the historical record is abundantly clear. The Muslim tax on Christians resulted in the outright theft and enslavement of Christian children.
“The formation of the Janissaries has been dated to the reign of Murad I (r. 1362-1389), the third ruler of the Ottoman Empire. The Ottomans instituted a tax of one-fifth on all slaves taken in war, and it was from this pool of manpower that the sultans first constructed the Janissary corps as a personal army loyal only to the sultan.
From the 1380s to 1648, the Janissaries were gathered through the devşirme system which was abolished in 1638.
This was the taking (enslaving) of non-Muslim boys, notably Anatolian and Balkan Christians; Jews were never subject to devşirme, nor were children from Turkic families. According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, “in early days, all Christians were enrolled indiscriminately. Later, those from Albania, Bosnia, and Bulgaria were preferred.” (Source: Wikipedia.com)
“This Islamic theft of Christian children continues today, in many parts of Africa and constitutes modern day slavery.” (Slavery in Islam, by Silas). Hence, the essential roots of the destruction of East Christianity is traceable to the “devshirme”, a Muslim tax imposed upon Christian families transacted through the theft of Christian boys, at least from Ottoman times. As previously mentioned, this practice continues in various parts of Africa, wherein, Christian boys and girls have been abducted by Muslim militants and sold into varying types of slavery.
Consider the outright onslaught outrageously conducted in a genocidal frenzy by Muslim groups within former Christian Byzantine provinces. This slaughter has continued to the present day.
“1. Genocide is a crime under both federal and international law. Article 2 of the Geneva Convention defines genocide as any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial or religious group:
(a) Killing its members; (b) Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group; (c) Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part; (d) Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group; (e) Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.
ISIS openly declares that it intends to destroy Christianity by killing Christians who will not convert to Islam and by enslaving Christian women.
- Under federal law (22 U.S.C. §8213 the Genocide Convention Implementation Act of 1987, 18 U.S.C. §§1091, 1092, 1093) the President and the Secretary of State have a duty to “collect information regarding incidents that may constitute . . . genocide,” and then the President “shall consider what actions can be taken to ensure that . . . [those] who are responsible for . . . genocide . . . are brought to account for such crimes in an appropriately constituted tribunal.”
- Shlomo, a nongovernmental organization of internally displaced persons, has been working to catalog the crimes suffered by the Christian community in the Nineveh Plain since 2003. It has provided a list of 1,131 Christians that have been killed between 2003 and the rise of ISIS in the summer of 2014. Since then, it has recorded more than a hundred more.
- In Syria, where the organization Aid to the Church in Need has reported on mass graves of Christians, Patriarch Younan estimates the number of Christians “targeted and killed by Islamic terrorist bands” at more than 1,000. Melkite Catholic Archbishop Jean-Clément Jeanbart of Aleppo estimates the number of Christians kidnapped and/or killed in his city as in the hundreds, with as many as “thousands” killed throughout Syria.
- ISIS is estimated to have taken over 1,500 Yazidi and Christian girls as sex slaves. They are bought and sold on an open slave market, and are often raped in rapid succession by a number of fighters in a single night. One Christian man from Mosul committed suicide after ISIS fighters brutally raped his wife and daughter in front of him. Another woman was victimized so often that she resorted to defecating on herself to make herself less desirable, and had to be trained to use the bathroom again after she escaped. Outside Aleppo, Syria, two women were publicly raped when they refused to convert from Christianity before they were beheaded. “
( 5 Facts About Genocide Against Christians in the Middle East, by Joe Carter)
Sound familiar, although, many dissociative and gutless members of varying political organizations, will attempt to appease globalist oil interests and Western apologists, the salient truth is a historic pattern emerges, concerning Islamic oppression of Christians and other religious groups. This at least stems back to the Janissaries abductions and forced conversions through the Armenian genocide. Such nefarious Islamic practices, contrary to liberal populist opinion, did not first originate with Boko haram and Isis.
In fact, violence among the Coptic Christians in Egypt appears to be ever increasing, “The Islamic extremists feel they can target these people [Christians] because they know they are not protected,” declared Doss, adding: The Egyptian government has failed time and time and time again to provide basic protection for these people [Christians]. The Christians that I speak to on a daily basis that are coming to the U.S. to seek asylum — they don’t want to leave their country. They’re not happy to leave. They wish they can stay. They love Egypt, but unfortunately, they feel that Egypt doesn’t love them. “(cited from Coptic Christian: ‘Sharp Escalation in Violence’ Against Egypt’s Christians Under President Sisi, by EDWIN MORA,18 Mar 2017, Breitbart Report)
The mathematics regarding the genocidal war Islam wages on Christians are staggering: “A decade has gone by since the Rev. Douglas al-Bazi was kidnapped and had his teeth knocked out by Islamic jihadis in Baghdad, a nightmare that still haunts the Chaldean Catholic priest and one that fuels his quest to have the horror endured by his fellow Iraqi Christians be recognized for what it is: “genocide.”
“I am here to tell the world, ‘Do you realize what is happening or not? Are you going to help or not?’” Father al-Bazi said in Washington this week.
His visit is aimed at highlighting the resistance by the Obama administration to officially recognize that an organized genocide targeting ancient Christian communities is underway in Iraq and Syria.
By some estimates, there were as many as 2 million Christians of various denominations in Iraq in 2003. Today, there are fewer than 300,000, said Father al-Bazi, who fled Baghdad three years ago for the Kurdish city of Irbil, where tens of thousands of displaced Christians are living in 17 makeshift refugee camps.
“My ex-parish in Baghdad was 2,600 families. When I left, we were less than 300 families,” said the 43-year-old priest, who tried for years to hold the parish together after surviving the kidnapping in 2006. “I know [their] pain. So I don’t blame people when they decide to leave.” (cited from Catholic priest demands U.S. recognize genocide against Christians in Iraq, Syria by Guy Taylor, The Washington Times )
To those who wish to minimize these savage and systematic cleansing of Christianity from former Byzantine provinces consider this genocide conducted by the forces of Islam within the context of a millennium rather than the last decade. In fact, the author of this essay, intentionally, utilizes the collapse of the Byzantine empire, in order, to direct the reader, to a more panoramic view point and broader perspective, in regards, to the systematic depopulation of Christian communities in that region of the world. A stark reality, which many modern-day politicians flatly deny either from flagrant incompetence or subtle self-interest.
Ironically, these same Western politicians, portray themselves, more enlightened than the Crusaders of a past and bygone era, but despite the foibles of the Crusades, perhaps, the Crusaders were more moral than the politician, which denies the holocaust against Christians.
